Abstract
333,758. Whitehead, G. O. Aug. 29, 1929. Luggage and like holders; receptacles, detachably securing to running boards of vehicles.-A detachable luggage carrier for road vehicles, primarily for carrying golf bags, guns, &c., comprises an inclined socket member 2 having a flat base plate 1 permanently fixed to the running board of the vehicle and a supporting rod 6 detachably engaging the socket 2 by means of a bayonet joint 4, 7 acting in conjunction with a spring 3 contained in the lower end of the socket. The support 6 is provided with means, such as a spring steel claw 9 at the lower end and a bracket 10 with straps 11 or a. spring clip at the upper end, for attaching articles thereto, and has also a handle 12 which may be solid with the bracket 10 to facilitate removal. A bell-shaped cover 8 prevents ingress of water &c. at the junction of the arm and fixed member and when the carrier is not in use a short rod is slipped into the socket for a like purpose to protect the spring. Suitable locking means may be provided between the support and socket.
