Abstract

333,636. Fine Cotton Spinners' & Doublers' Association, Ltd., and Haydock, J. May 21, 1929. Combing-machines. - In a Nasmith combinamachine having feed mechanism of the type wherein a partial reverse rotation is imparted to the feed roller or rollers as the nipper plate necedes thereby drawing within the nip of the roller and the nipper plate or between the two rollers long fibres of the material being combed and so preventing such fibres being rejected as waste, a ratchetwheel is mounted on the end of the feed roller or rollers and is engaged by a pawl on the backward movement of the nipper plate to cause the reverse rotation. The feed roller A, Fig. 2, is rotated forwardly on forward movement of the nipper plate A<1> through the usual driving mechanism comprising a ratchet wheel B on the roller-shaft a and a pawl C mounted on the casing D, the latter being oscillated through levers E, F connected at H to the machine frame, an adjustable bayonet member G serving to depress the tail c of the pawl C and hold it out of engagement with the wheel B to stop the rotation. The reverse rotation is imparted through a second ratchet-wheel B<1>, Fig. 1, mounted on the opposite end of the roller shaft and actuated through a pawl C<1>, corresponding members E', F', G<1> being mounted as shown. Alternatively both ratchet-wheels are arranged at one end of the roller A, and if desired the two pawls C, C<1> may be controlled by a single member G, Fig. 4. In a modification of this form the amount of reverse rotation of the roller A through the pawl C<1> and ratchet-wheel B<1> is controlled by an adjustable leg K, Fig. 5, which may be attached to the arm F and which serves to remove the pawl C<1> from the wheel B<1>. In a further modification, the ratchet-wheel B and pawl C employed for the forward rotation also produce the reverse rotation. The fibres are fed forward by clockwise rotation of the wheel B by the pawl C. Just before the nipper plate A<1> reaches the foremost position the pawl C passes under a stud k<1> carried on a bracket k, Fig. 8. As the nipper plate recedes the pawl is held in engagement. with the ratchet-wheel and the two rotate together in a reverse direction until the pawl is clear of the stud k<1>, the pawl then tripping over the ratchet-teeth.
