Abstract

332,876. Universelle Cigarettenmaschinen Fabrik J. C. M³ller & Co. Dec. 24, 1928, [Convention date]. Apparatus for making necked or shouldered boxes. Two box parts with neck inserts are formed at the same time on a single former which preferably has an encircling projection or rib 6 against the sides of which the neck strips abut. The two gummed neck strips 1 are laid parallel to each other on the side flaps 3 of the pair of box blanks 4, the space x between the neck strips being equal to the width of the rib 6 on the former 5 which is forced against the neck strips by a plunger 7 which folds the strips about the sides of the former. The neck strips and blanks are then pressed against a die 8 and the parts are carried by the plunger and die through a shaping channel 2 where the blanks are folded against the former and the side flaps against the neck strips. 'The former and box assemblies are now opposite a channel 10, and a sliding finger 13 folds down the end of the neck strips at the left while a plunger 11 pushes the former &c. into the channel 10 where the remaining projecting ends of the neck strips are folded down by a projection 14 and the side flaps 3<1> of the box blanks are folded against the neck strips. The channel 10 may be heated to ensure effective adhesion of the neck strips to the side flaps of the box parts. In another arrangement the neck strips are laid around the former which is pushed through a channel to a position over one of the box blanks where the former is engaged by a plunger and pushed with the box blank through a shaping channel where the box blank is folded around the former on to one of the neck strips. The former is then pushed under the second box blank and a plunger engages it and pushes it with the blank into a second forming channel where the blank is folded around the former on to the other neck strip.
