Abstract
332,861. Siemens - Schuckertwerke Akt.-Ges. Nov. 17, 1928, [Convention date]. Cables and conductors; machines, apparatus and processes for making.-In order to manufacture non-circular cores for a heavy-current cable so as to be free from twisting stresses, a central conductor 2 drawn from a drum 21, conductors 5 fed from a drum 4 which is mounted in a coretwisting basket 3, and wires 6, are led through an apertured disc 7 and a tube 8 to the end of a tube 9 where the conductors are wound by a twisting disc 10 round the central conductor 2. The disc 10 is connected to the basket 3 by the rotatable tube 9 which passes through the hollow spindle of a twisting basket, 11, and by a coupling formed into the tube 8. Wires 12 forming the outer laver of the sector are fed from drums 13 mounted in the basket 11, and are twisted round the sector with opposite twist by a twisting disc 14. A divided nipple 15 and shaping rolls 16 are mounted in a rotatable support 17 which is longitudinally adjusted by a spindle and hand-wheel 18. A shaft 19 drives the machine, the basket 3 with the tube 9 and the disc 10 being given the same direction and speed of rotation as the rolls 16. A chain-drive 50 drives the rolls 16 from the basket 3. The basket 11 is driven in the opposite direction from intermediate gearing 51. The axes of the rolls 16 are relatively adjustable to form an angle corresponding to the length of twist of the cable sector. In operation, a drawing-off disc leads the wires to the discs 10, 14 where they are given the sector twist, the nipple 15 and the rolls 16 giving the prescribed sector form. The sector is then wound with paper 20 by spinners between which may be mounted pairs of press rolls 30. The rolls 30 mav be positively driven from the shaft 19 by a chain wheel 31 and a chain 32 through a detachable coupling 34. Fig. 2 shows the finished sector in cross-section.
