Abstract

Cellulose carboxylates. - Artificial yarns, threads, or filaments of cellulose acetate or other cellulose derivatives are subjected to a vacuum treatment subsequent to the spinning operation in order to remove the residual solvent, and the solvent thereby removed is conveyed to a solvent recovery plant. The process may be carried out with the assistance of heat, and small quantities of air or other gas, heated or not, may be passed over the yarns or the like during the vacuum treatment. The yarns may also be subjected to a humidifying atmosphere either during or after the vacuum treatment. The process may be carried out in a convenient manner in a chamber constructed of ribbed cast-iron plates and arranged with doors at each end so that the trays containing the yarn in the form of bobbins, cheeses, hanks or the like may be introduced at one end, and after treatment removed from the other end. In carrying out the invention, the yarn is introduced into the chamber and a slight vacuum, say 2 in. of water, is first applied until the yarn has acquired the temperature of the chamber, which may be from 60‹ to 70‹ C., and a high vacuum of about 28 in. is then applied until the solvent is removed.
