Periodic.-In a press for stamping or cutting and shaping sheet metal the buffers 7 are connected by racks and pinions 12 to brake wheels 14 which provide a constant resistance to the descent. The wheels are acted on by shoes 21 which are urged against them by the compression of a rubber block 20, the degree of compression being set by a nut 18. The buffers 7 are returned to position by a spring 17, the, compression of which is set by a nut 15<a>. To allow non-braked return of the buffers, a cam 29, Fig. 1, acting on linkwork and levers 26, presses down the brake shoes 21 clear of their wheels. The wheels may be connected to the buffers by a oneway clutch to give similar braked descent and free return.
