Abstract
330,574. Christiansen, H. March 11, 1929. Percussive tools.-A long - handled portable device for use in ramming railway ballast comprises a free piston 37 actuated in the manner of a two-stroke cycle internal-combustion engine and adapted to deliver an approximately horizontal blow on a tamping tool 34, which is retracted by a spring (not shown). The chamber 35, into which the charge is drawn through a port 43 past a carburetting orifice 44, serves as a pre-compression chamber for the charge, which then passes through the transfer passage 41 into the combustion chamber 36, effecting a scavenging operation as indicated by arrows. The piston rebounds to the left after striking the tool shank, the rebound being aided by the cushioning in the chamber 35, and ignites the charge by striking a contact breaker 48. A starting lever 55 is actuated by hand or foot. In a modified device the positions of the compression 'and combustion chambers are interchanged, the blow being given by the rebound of the striker after, compression. In this case the starting lever engages a tail rod by a toothed sector. In a further modification the striker may be mounted inside the piston and connected thereto by springs. Fig. 4 shows a modification in which the striking piston 71 is actuated at right angles to the combustion cylinder by air pressure operating through passages 69, 73. A spring may be used to move the piston 71 in one direction.
