Abstract
330,531. Schundler, H. O. March 8, 1929. Coking processes; retorts.-The destructive distillation of solid materials having volatile contents. such as oil shale, coal, or wood, is carried out in a rotary retort 6 of hexagonal cross section, the material being charged through a conduit 9 and discharged into a water seal 18, and the volatiles withdrawn through an outlet 13. It is stated that the various fractions of volatiles are produced in stratified layers in the upper part of the retort in which the gases are undisturbed, and that if nitrogen or air is admitted, compounds such as pyridine and members of the aniline and quinoline series mav be obtained. Three of these retorts may be arranged in series and heated to 750' F., 900‹ F., and 1250‹ F. respectively, the vapours. recovered during the second stage containing hexamethylene amines and other amido groups of these naphthenes, and polymethylenes; and from the third stage compounds such as pyridine and compounds of the aniline and quinoline series will be obtained.
