Abstract

329,323. Stratford, H. R. Feb. 14, 1929. Wheels.-An abrasive tool for grinding and polishing metal, wood, and other panels, &c., consists of a hub 2 adapted to be secured to the shaft 1 of a portable machine and removably carrying a resilient pad 3 of rubber &c. which may be reinforced by layers of fabric 4. The pad has applied thereto a resilient surfacing- element 5 retained in position by a nut 6 screwing on the hub and entering a recess in the pad, and the hub has a supporting flange 10 the diameter of which does not exceed one half of the diameter of the pad. The surfacing-element may consist of a disc 15 of vulcanized fibre having abrasive 16 applied thereto either directly by an adhesive, or with an intermediate cloth diso 17, or the surfacing-element may be in the form of a wire screen to which is applied a finer screen carrying the abrasive. In a further modification, the element may comprise a wire screen embedded within layers of abrasive and adhesive, either side of the disc then being available for polishing. In a still further modification, the pad may be reinforced additionally by lapped metal &c. plates.
