Abstract
329,321. Standard Telephones & Cables, Ltd., (Bell Telephone Laboratories, Inc.). Feb. 13, 1929. Aerials; directive signalling.- A directive aerial, Fig. 2, consists of a conductor bent into the form of a plurality of sections, the intermediate section being in the form of squares whose sides are each an even multiple of a quarter of a wave length and the end sections being in the form of bisected squares having the short sides each an odd multiple of a quarter of a wave length. The arrangement is such that the currents in the vertical portions of the aerial are in phase and those in the horizontal portions are of opposite phase and thus neutralize each other. A plurality of aerials of the type shown in Fig. 2 may be arranged in the same vertical or horizontal plane or along a suitable curve at distances of half a wave length apart and in combination with the aerials, reflectors, constructed similarlv to the aerials, may be employed. The reflectors may be located at a distance of one quarter of a wave length behind the aerials. Energy to be radiated is preferably supplied to the aerial at anti-nodal points, e.g., R, S.
