Abstract

Variable-speed and reversing gearing comprises a variable-throw crank 3 which reciprocates a pair of pivotally supported segmental racks 6, 7 in engagement with pinions 8, 9 driven in reverse directions by the racks and arranged by ratchet gearing to impart uni-directional motion to a driven shaft 2. The crank-pin 10, Fig. 4, is carried in a block 11 slidable in the crank-disc and in screw engagement with a member 13 which can be rotated, to vary the crank-throw, through bevels 14, 15 by a screw member 16 arranged within the hollow driving-shaft 1, under the influence of an axially movable collar 19 on the shaft. In a modification, the crank-pin is carried on a rack slidable in the crank-disc and engaging, through a train of spur gears, a second rack axially slidable on the driving-shaft and operated by a collar thereon. Locking-means may be provided for the collars, and external reversing-gear 31 may be provided comprising a secondary driven shaft, indicated by broken lines in Fig. 1, which carries a pair of spur gears adapted to be selectively put into engagement with a slidable pinion on the shaft 2, either directly or through an idle wheel.
