Filters having sheet filtering-materials.-An oil filter is provided with a corrugated filtering partition of felt, wire gauze or the like so arranged that, when the filter contains more than a certain amount of oil, the oil is bye-passed and not filtered. As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the partition takes the form of a vertical tube 5, the shape of which is retained by sewing or stapling the inner ends of the corrugations to a central gauze tube 6 or by fastening the felt either when flat or after folding to a base or stiffener of sufficient rigidity. Oil enters the casing 1 through an inlet 3, is deflected by a cone 8, held against the upper end of the partition by a spring 9, filters inwardly and is discharged through an outlet 4. When the oil accumulates to the level of the top of the tube 5 it passes from the spaces between the loops of the filter direct into the tube 6. In a modification, Fig. 3, a central tube 22 having a plug 23 and perforations above and within the filtering partition serves both as inlet and outlet. The filtering partition need not be tubular and reference is made to apparatus comprising a filtering wall corrugated in elevation and rectangular in plan, the liquid being delivered above it and withdrawn from below.
