Abstract

326,987. Williams, L. S. March 11, 1929. Socks for boots and shoes are made of boardlike material the upper surface of which has a friction glaze. Preferably, mill board is used, and the glaze imparted to it by passing a sheet under a glazing ball of chilled cast iron at the end of a heavy suspended beam, the sheet being supported on a bedplate pressed up to the ball by a treadle. The beam reciprocates and the operator manipulates the sheet. The under surface of the sock may be coated or impregnated with paraffin wax. The pulp from which the board is made mav be mixed with small proportions of boric acid, formaldehyde, salicylic acid, alum, sodium benzoate, borax, or other chemicals imparting antiseptic or prophylactic properties, or the sheet may be impregnated with these substances.
