Abstract
326,687. Smith & Wesson, Inc., and Wesson, H. April 17, 1929. Valves, closing after predetermined interval or flow.-In a. slow-closing flush valve, the casing 9 is provided with an inlet 10 at one end and a valved outlet 13 at the opposite end, the valve member 14, which is normally closed by the fluid pressure, being attached to a lower cross-bar 16 which is connected by rods 17 passing through a skeleton guide-frame 18 to an upper cross-bar 15 carrying a piston 25 working in a cylinder 24 disposed on the frame 18 to an upper cross-bar 15 carrying a piston 25 working in a cylinder 24 disposed on the frame 18 with its open end directed away from the valve member. A check valve 27 permits the cylinder 24 to fill as the valve, and with it the piston 25, is raised, the slow passage of the fluid between the piston and the wall of the cylinder retarding the subsequent closure of the valve under fluid pressure. The valve head is grooved to receive the cross-bar 16 and is loosely connected thereto by a cross-pin 19 so that it may accommodate itself to the seating. A stem 28, to which is pinned a collar 29, is retained in the piston by a spring 30 and is threaded into the upper cross-bar 15, being adjusted therein from outside the casing by a feathered connection 21 to a thimble 20 maintained in position by a nut 31. To open the valve, a lug 37 on the boss of the upper cross-bar is engaged by a cam 36 on the end of an operating-spindle 34 mounted in a sleeve or nipple 35 screwed into the casing wall, a stuffing box 38 preventing leakage. The boss 33 of an operating-handle is secured to the spindle by a pin 39 passing through slots in the sleeve restricting the movement, a spring 42 normally maintaining the handle and spindle in inoperative position. A nut 43 closing the outer end of the sleeve may be provided with a. rubber plug 44 to cushion impact of a seat &c.
