Casks and like enclosed spaces, lamps for illuminating.--kia electric inspection lamp of the kind comprising a long rod or carrier 16 with a handle 14 containing a mercury switch has the lamp bulb 11 protected by an outer slotted metal casing 12 and an inner glass cylinder or globe 13 the metal casing being locked in position by the rod or carrier. The metal casing is screwed on to the lamp holder 18 which is carried by an inner tube 15, and recesses 24 in the casing engage projections 23 on a collar 22 fitting over flats 21 on the lamp holder 18 so that it can move endwise but not rotate. The collar 22 is held in position by the outer sleeve 16 of the carrier which is pressed against the collar by a nut 32 threaded on the inner tube 15 and bearing against a sleeve 30 which through a collar 27 acts on the upper end of the sleeve 16. The collar 27 fits over flats on the inner tube 15 and has projections 28 engaging slots 31 in the sleeve 30. The leads are connected to metal plates 34, 35 separated by an insulator 37 within which 'is mounted a sleeve 38 containing a globule of mercury 39. The sleeve 38 is in connection with the plate 34 and in the position shown the mercury completes the circuit to the bulb through a central rod 17. When the lamp is raised the circuit is opened.
