Abstract

321,903. Textiles (New Process), Ltd. Oct. 8, 1928, [Convention date]. Retting.-In the preparation of textile fibres suitable for spinning from cleaned waste vegetable material of any suitable type such as waste jute, the material, after it has been sorted according to the qualities of the fibre, beaten to remove dust and then washed in running water, is heaped and wetted with a solution containing 0.02 gram of olein or other fatty acid, vaseline, oil, or the like, 0.01 gram potassium nitrate, 0.01 gram of magnesium sulphate and 0.01 gram of potassium phosphate per litre, and heated to about 30‹ C. The material is left to ferment for 24-48 hours, then opened out, and scoured for 1 hour with 1 per cent solution of either caustic soda, sodium carbonate, magnesium chloride; or alkaline earths, ammonia or the like, or with the liquor resulting from a previous scouring operation. The ligneous products are thus dissolved. The fibre thus obtained is washed, bleached, then passed to a bath heated to 30‹-40‹ C. and containing for example 2.5 per cent soap, 2.5 per cent vaselines oil, 0.5 per cent alkali, the treatment lasting 1 hour. The fibre is then hydroextracted to leave 30-35 per cent moisture, passed into a wool carding machine, and flnally dried. Thus is obtained a white, curly, supple material.
