321,728. Johnson, J. Y., (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). June 21, 1928. Nitric acid.-The production of concentrated nitric acid by the action of oxygen upon liquid or vaporous nitrogen peroxide or other nitrogen oxides in presence of dilute nitric acid is carried out in a fractionating column charged with fillers. Pressures up to about 10 atmospheres may be used. The temperature is regulated so as to be about 20-25‹ C. in the upper part and 100-125‹ C. in the lower part. In the upper part of the column at temperatures of 20-25‹ C. the vapour phase consists mainly of nitrogen peroxide, in the middle parts at temperatures of 25-84‹ C. it consists of a mixture of nitrogen peroxide and nitric acid, at 85-90‹ C. of practically pure nitric acid vapours which may be withdrawn and condensed, and at 90-125‹ C. of nitric acid and water vapour. The nitric acid vapours withdrawn at 88‹ C. may be used to expel nitrogen oxides from already condensed nitric acid. The column may be heated by passing into it, vapours from the nitric acid of lowest vapour pressure and of boiling-point of about 123‹ C. passing from the base of the column. Dilute nitric acid for use in the process may be obtained by absorbing in water the nitrous gases obtaised by the combustion of ammonia.
