Abstract

320,600. Washburn, E. C. May 15, 1928. Moulds.-A cast ingot is cooled from the bottom upwards by directing cool air against the lower portion of the mould and conducting the hot gases from the ingot to the upper portion. The ingot mould 10 is surrounded by a lower casing 14 provided with air inlets 14<b> and if desired with inlets from a conduit 13 into which cool air is forced. The upper end of the mould is enclosed in a casing 15 spaced from the mould by lugs 15<a>, 15<b>. In a, modification a single casing 24, Fig. 6 with inlet and outlet holes 24<b> and a cover 25 may be used. The upper part of this casing may be thickened to constrict the passage for escape of hot gases if desired. In another modification the ingot is poured before being introduced, by means of a truck 16, Fig. 4, into a casing which takes the form of a tunnel 19 the ends of which serve for the passage of cool air Hot air &c. may be drawn from the upper part 19<a> by a flue 19<d> and used in a furnace or to heat boilers. The inner surface of the moulds may be smoothed when they have become roughened in use.
