Abstract

320,421. Johnson, J. Y., (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). July 7, 1928. Divided on 315,991. Hydrogenation, destructive; hydrocarbons, cracking.-Oils, tars &c. are converted into products of low boiling point by heating them in the presence of organic amides or amines with or without aldehydes or ketones containing more than four atoms of carbon in the molecule. The process may be carried out in the presence of hydrogen or other gases and under atmospheric or higher pressures, the temperature being maintained between 400 and 600‹ C. Metals, their oxides or their salts may be employed in conjunction with the amines, the salts preferably being capable of combining with the aldehydes or ketones, e.g. sodium hydrosulphite which reacts with formaldehyde to give sodium formaldehyde sulphoxylate. 100 parts of tar are heated with 2 parts formamide to 600‹ C. in a quartz column filled with pumice giving a product 31 parts of which boil below 200‹ C. In other examples the reagents used include acetamide and hexamethylenetetramine, aniline and copper-cobalt-oxide zeolite, quinoline and calcium bromide.
