Abstract

320,333. Fairey, C. R. May 3, 1928. Controlling. - In order to prevent excessive stresses from being produced at high speeds in wings having auxiliary planes or other " slot " forming means, the auxiliary planes or other means are acted upon to prevent the formation of or to close the slots when the load on a member transmitting stresses in the plane of the flying loads exceeds a predetermined value. The slot mechanism may be acted upon by certain of the main flying wires a at the front of the wing structure which act upon a bell-crank lever b, c. A spring d acting on this lever determines the stress at which the closing action commences. The arm c of this lever moves over a rod g provided with stops h linked to a cam member k mounted on a spindle m, a part j of the cam being concentric with the spindle. The cam k acts on a push rod n connected to one of the parallel links e or other mounting for the auxiliary plane f. A lever i on the spindle m is adapted to be engaged by stops on a rod o connected to a bell-crank lever r moved by a rod s to enable the pilot to close the slot or to prevent it from opening.
