Abstract
320,211. Johnson, J. Y., (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). Sept. 14, 1928. Addition to 301,775, [Class 55 (i), Coking &c.]. Oil gas.-Gaseous and easily condensible olefines, benzines and aromatic hydrocarbons are obtained from tars, mineral oils, asphalts, or residues from destructive hydrogenation by impregnating granular porous materials such as pumice, slag, or coke with these products and passing the impregnated material quickly through a chamber maintained at red heat and quickly separating and cooling the resulting gas obtained in the manner described in the parent Specification. The carbon deposited on the porous material may be gasified in the manner described in Specification 214,544, (Class 55 (i), Coking &c.], and the gases employed for heating the reaction chamber. Slag impregnated with tar is fed from a hopper F by a conveyer B into a Cowper stove heated by a hot blast from a conduit A. Gases are drawn off through an outlet D and cooled for recovery of the benzines &c. An inert gas is blown by a fan E into the hopper F to prevent hot gases from the chamber below causing the pieces of material to stick together. These pieces may also be prevented from sticking together by dusting with ash or other powder. If the residues contain larger quantities of solid carbonaceous constituents they may be briquetted and passed in this form through the heating chamber. An alternative heating chamber comprising an externally heated nickel-chromium-iron tube through which the material falls, or an inclined revolving tube furnace may be used.
