Abstract
319,804. Villain, P. April 26, 1928. Soaps, compositions for making.-In the maufacture of perfumed soaps, ordinary rosin is replaced by an aromatic composition consisting of terpenes, sesquiterpenes or polyterpenes; synthetic or ordinary resins; and the residues from the extraction of flowers by fats or solvents, known as resinoids, resinodors, floral wax or resinaromes. These are dissolved in a suitable solvent, e.g. methyl alcohol, diacetone, cyclohexanol, propyl alcohol, isopropyl alcohol, monobuty alcohol, ethylene glycol or trichlorethylene, and emulsified with a mixture of ammonium sulphoricinoleate and glycerine, or other wellknown emulsifier. The whole mixture is heated to 70‹-90‹ C. and stirred to obtain a homogeneous emulsion, which is dissolved in the soap during the saponification of the whole. The terpenes may consist of the pure bodies, or mixtures thereof, e.g. residues from the removal of terpenes, by-products of the distillation of essential oils, or admixed with essential oils, isolates, e.g. geraniol, or perfumery chemicals, e.g. phenyl ethyl alcohol. In an example, the composition suitable for an Eau de Cologne soap comprises 8-10 lbs. of a mixture of terpenes, 6-4 lbs. of synthetic or natural resin, 1 lb. of gum benzoin and 8 oz. wax residue from orange flower oil extracted by solvent, added to a mixture of 8 lbs. industrial methylated spirit at 65‹ O.P., 7 lbs. cyclohexanol or propyl alcohol, 1¢ lbs. glycerine, and 1 lb. ammonium ricinoleate. The whole mixture is heated gradually to 80‹ C., and stirred to obtain a homogeneous, clear emulsion, which is then added to a soap base consisting of 65 lbs. tallow and 20 lbs. copra, when the same is " boiling on strength," caustic soda being added if necessary, and the saponification completed. For a transparent soap, a small excess of alkali must be left, and the soap base, after solidifying, flaking and drying, is transferred to a vacuum still with reflux and remelted with 40 per cent to 50 per cent of industrial methylated spirit and 8-10 per cent of glycerine, the whole being heated to 80‹ C. and then raised gradually to 97‹ C., and boiled under 5 per cent increase above atmospheric pressure for 3 hours. When transparent, it is cooled to 75‹ C., 1¢-2 per cent of an Eau de Cologne mixture of essential oils is added, stirred and poured into frames or moulds. For a milling soap, the soap base after saponification must be neutral.
