Obstruction removers and safety appliances for motor vehicles and the like are operated either automatically or by hand-operated levers, in conjunction with operating devices for the brake and clutch mechanisms which may be jointly or separately controlled. As shown, the lifeguard comprises an upper guard A<5> and a lower guard hinged to the vehicle, the lower guard itself comprising two parts, one A<1> being hinged to the vehicle and carrying a roll A<3> and slots in which the second part A<2> may slide vertically so as to reach nearly to the ground when the life guard is operated. The part A<2> is connected by links E<3> to cranks on a transverse shaft E and is held in the off-position by means of a pin F<2> on a pawl F engaging with a detent D<5> connected to the shaft E. The guard lever A is connected to a rod D having a forked extension in contact with the guard and a rod D' connected to a crank D<2> a pin D<3> on which is adapted to operate the pawl F by means of its inclined faces F<1>. On pulling the lever A or operating the guard by an obstruction the rods D, D<1> cause the pin F<2> to be lifted to allow the shaft E to rotate and cause the guard A<2> to drop. Associated with the guard lever A is a brake lever B and a clutch member G<1>. As the guard lever moves rearwards a pin A<5> engages the brake lever B to move and apply the brake through the lever B<1>. The clutch member G<1> is pivoted at A<10> and is operated by horizontal sliding rods G<3>, G<4> connected to the guard lever A and the foot lever G<2> respectively by means of pins G<7> acting on a cam surface G<5>.
