Acetic and other fatty acids and their esters.- In the process of Specification 283,989 for the production of acetic and other fatty acids and their esters by interaction of carbon monoxide with alcohols, ethers and esters, the inorganic acids employed as catalysts are activated by the incorporation of copper or a copper compound such as the phosphate or formate. The reaction is preferably effected in vessels made of or lined with copper, gold, platinum or other resistant material, e.g. graphite. According to the examples, methyl alcohol vapour and carbon monoxide, with or without water vapour, are passed under pressure through a heated gold-lined vessel charged with pyrophosphoric acid containing a little metallic copper or copper formate; the product comprises acetic acid and methyl acetate. The Provisional Specification states that the invention is applicable broadly to all catalytic processes for the synthesis of oxygenated organic compounds from alcohols, whether in the free or combined state, and carbon monoxide.
