Abstract

317,115. Hinchcliffe, W., and Scott, J. May 9, 1928. Dynamos and motors combined for transmitting power.-Relates to motor power plant for ship propulsion of the type in which a reciprocating steam engine 1, driving a propeller shaft 9 direct, exhausts into a low pressure turbine 5 which drives an electric generator 7 which feeds an electric motor 8 on the propeller shaft. The turbine is provided with an additional section 17 adapted to receive live steam from the main boiler or from an auxiliary boiler. The object is to ensure that the turbine may be maintained in operation for driving the propeller or auxiliary plant in the event of the reciprocating engine being stopped or supplying insufficient steam. The fresh steam supply pipe for the section 17 has a stop valve 21 and a throttle valve 20 controlled by a speed governor 14. A change-over valve 16 directs the exhaust of the engine 1 to the turbine 5 or to a condenser 6. The windings of the generator 7 and motor 8 are excited from a separate source, the circuits having a circuit breaker 11. The field circuit of the generator 7 has also a controlling rheostat 12 and a reversing switch 13 for use when the main engine 1 is reversed. An additional generator 32 may be provided for supplying current for auxiliary motors. A switch 30 in the supply line of the motor 8 may be actuated by the governor 14, or may be linked to one of the valves 20, 21. The valves 16, 21 may be interconnected.
