Abstract

315,004. Groven, J. H., (Assignee of Soc. Anon. des Ciments Portland Artificiels Belges d'Harmignies). July 6, 1928, [Convention date]. Void [Published under Sect. 91 of the Acts]. Rotary strainers.-The coarser particles of a suspension are separated by straining under pressure, finer particles being retained in the strained liquid. In the case of a rotary strainer arranged for straining inwards the pressure may be due to the liquid level outside the strainer. The strainer 3 is mounted over a receiver 2 to which the suspension is supplied from a pipe 2g through valves 2b delivering on to a plate 2P. Strained liquid is discharged through a channel or channels 3r at one or both ends of the strainer. The cylinder may consist of two layers of gauze, of fine and coarse mesh respectively, supported on longitudinal bars 3g and rings 3<s>, 3<h>. During rotation the bars 3<g> lilt a portion of the strained liquid and thus flush the strainer. The strainer may also be kept clean by steam, water, or air directed under pressure against the interior or exterior surface. The coarse matter and excess liquid are discharged through valves 2<r> which may be controlled according to the level of the liquid by a float in the vessel or according to the percentage of water in the mixture under treatment or to the rate of revolution of the strainer. The strainer may be rotated by directing the incoming liquid from the valves 2b on to paddles attached to shaft 3a. Paddles may also be provided for stirring the material in the receiver 2. Fine particles of matter discharged with the coarser particles may be recovered by decantation. Reference is made to modified apparatus in which the strainer is divided by a transverse partition into two compartments having gauze of a different mesh, so that the compartments separate products of different qualities which are discharged at opposite ends of the strainer. The invention is stated to be applicable to the treatment of suspensions of chalk, kaolin, talc, coal dust, sand, ores and metallic oxides.
