313,615. Soc. of Chemical Industry in Basle. June 15, 1928, [Convention date]. Addition to 275,995. Condensation products of urea and thiourea with formaldehyde.-In the process of the parent Specification, the solution obtained by addition of thiourea or a mixture of thiourea and urea to the primary condensation solution is worked up by evaporation only after the greater part of the free formaldehyde present has been fixed by standing at approximately neutral reaction and at ordinary or slightly raised temperature. The products obtained by evaporation are particularly stable, and varnishes prepared therefrom are fast to water. According to the examples, urea is mixed with formaldehyde solution and blood charcoal, then filtered and heated for some hours in an autoclave; the condensation product is exactly neutralized to litmus with caustic soda, mixed with thiourea and then either allowed to stand for some days or gently heated for some hours, whereby the formaldehyde content is reduced to small proportions; the product can then be worked up into a varnish or other material by evaporation.
