Thrashing - machines; straw softening.-Corn and straw from the beater A and concave B fall upon a stationary dressing box C, and pass down over a stepped sieve T, F, the holes in which are preferably funnel-shaped. The feed of the material over the sieve is regulated by a damper D. A distributing valve divides the space under the sieve into two portions and a powerful blast of air is directed by a blower G through the part E of the sieve above the first portion thus lifting the straw and chaff from the sieve and allowing the grain to tall through on to a slope f that directs it to a collecting box L. The other portion F of the sieve permits the passage of any small quantity of grain that has been carried on by the straw and chaff. From the box L the grain passes on to a sieve P through which a blast of air is directed by a blower I to remove the last traces of chaff. This chaff may be directed out of the machine by opening a valve Q, or if the valve is closed the chaff is directed into a straw-header consisting of a beater S and concave R where it mixes with the straw and chaff passing off the sieve E, F. The chaff and chopped straw escaping from the header pass over another stepped sieve V, Z through which any last few grains fall; a blower U directs air through this sieve. A curved plate T which normally directs the straw to the header may be replaced by a table bridging the beater when long straw is required. The sieve Z can be turned upwardly into the machine for transport or it may be mounted on a separate frame detachable from the main frame and provided if required with wheels for transport.
