Abstract

312,774. Jobson, C. H., (Standard Oil Co.). April 30, 1928. Mineral oils, purifying &c.-Discolouration of petroleum distillates, such as kerosene and gasoline, resulting from oxidation, is prevented or removed by the addition of an aromatic or aliphatic dihydroxy compound, an aromatic amine, a phenol, urea or a urea derivative, or an alkaloid insufficient in amount to colour the distillate and preferably not in greater proportion than 1 part by weight to 10,000 parts of distillate. Suitable agents are para-phenylenediamine, phenylhydrazine, cresol, hydroquinone, pyrocatechol, resorcinol, pyrogallol, urea, thiourea, thiocarbanilid, brucine, a.nd nicotine. The solid agents are preferably dissolved in an aliphatic or aromatic alcohol; alternatively the distillate can be caused to percolate through a mass of the agent. According to examples, ten per cent solutions of hydroquinone or pyrogallol in iso-propyl or secondary butyl alcohol are employed.
