Winding webs. - Filter wads for cigarettes, cigars, tobacco pipes, &c. are made by spirally winding a strip of material in two steps, the beginning of the spiral being formed by means of rotating tongs or the like, and the winding being completed by means of relatively movable surfaces, the tongs &c. being withdrawn prior to or during the second step. The material employed may be such as described in Specifications 236,957, [Class 130, Tobacco], 311,827; 311,831, [Class 130, Tobacco], and 311,832. In the apparatus shown in Figs 1, 2, 4 and 5, a length a of strip material is fed over a guide b having side walls b<1> and is engaged by a pair of rotatable tongs c carried by members c' on a shaft c<2> slidably keyed on a rotatable shaft d. The members c<1> are pressed apars by springs c' and are pressed together, to engage the strip a, by jaws e actuated by cams f and levers g. The tongs are rotated a determined number of turns and then withdrawn, and the winding of the strip a is completed by the longitudinal movement of a plate i, the completed wad being received by a fixed jaw j and a pivoted jaw j<1>. The plate i is slotted to pass over the jaws j, j<1> and may be resiliently or otherwise mounted to move away from the guide b as the diameter of the spiral increases, or the surface b<4> of the guide may be downwardly inclined. The plate i is withdrawn and the wad is ejected axially by a plunger k into a tube l by which it may be inserted in an enclosing tube or wrapper as described in Specification 311,827. In a modification, Fig. 10, the second step in the rolling is effected between a rotary drum m and a curved surface n, the distance of which from the drum increases in the direction of rotation. In a further form, Fig. 15, the second step is effected by a group of rollers o as described in Specification 236,957. In any of the forms described, the strip of material may be engaged at or near its centre by the tongs c, so that the material is wound in a double spiral as shown in Fig. 15.
