Type-bar machines.-In machines comprising type-bars slidable in a frame which is movable by either of two operating-members, and detents for differentially arresting the type-bars, the frame is provided with positive restoring-means, and the detents are automatically re-latched by means acting independently of movement of the typebars. As applied to the record-card controlled statistical machine described in Specification 183,867, [Class 106 (i), Calculating &,c.], the type-bars 51, Fig. 1, are mounted on a frame 53 which is movable vertically by an arm 54 on a shaft 56 provided with a bell-crank 62 having screws 63, 65 engaging lugs on loose arms 64, 66 which engage cams 70, 71 on the total-taking and listing shafts 60, 61 respectively. The typebars have extensions 75 resting on spring-urged levers 76, and are associated with detents 81 having latches 82 which are operated by wires 85 controlled by magnets 83. At each operation the frame is raised by the shaft 60 or 61 and the typebars are differentially positioned by the detents, the types 52 being thereupon struck by hammers 89. After the printing operation, the frame is depressed by means of a spring 68 and is positively restored by means of a cam 121 on the shaft 61 and a co-operating arm 116 which is mounted loosely on the shaft 56 and operates by means of a spring 120 an arm 115 fast on the shaft. The detents 81 are re-latched by means of a bail 98 secured to shaft 99 and having a member 96 in the path of an arm 100 which is mounted loosely on the shaft 56 and has fingers 101, 103 in the path of cams 102, 104 on the shaft 61 and a shaft 105 geared to the shaft 60. The latches 82 are returned by springs 108 and are positively restored by means of a bail 112 secured to a shaft 111 having an arm 110 in the path of an arm 109 on the shaft 99. After each printing operation, the bail 98 is rocked by means of the cam 102 or 104 and the detents are released from the type-bars and re-latched. The bail 112 serves also to restore the armatures 84 of the magnets.
