Abstract
310,833. Milliken Bros. & Blaw- Knox, Ltd., (Assignees of Dyrssen, W.). May 1, 1928, Convention date]. Regenerators; valves, reversing.-A reversible regenerative system is combined with an air preheater through which part of the waste gases from the checker chambers is passed by an exhausting fan. The preheater can be connected with and disconnected from the system by valves. In the open hearth furnace 1 shown part of the waste gases from the air and gas regenerators 4, 5 passes to the metallic preheater 13 by a pipe 14 and after passing through the preheater is withdrawn through a pipe 15 by a fan 16 and delivered to an aspirator 17 in the flue 10 leading to the stack 18, thus increasing the chimney draught. A fan 20 supplies atmospheric air to the preheater through a pipe 22 and the preheated air passes by a flue 24<1> to the air regenerator 4<1>. Gas is supplied to the gas regenerator 5<1> from a pipe 6<1> and the flow is reversed by valves 7, 7<1>, 9, 9<1>, 12, 12', 25, 25'. When the preheater is not required, e.g. during the refining period, air is supplied to the regenerators through openings governed by mushroom valves 26, 26<1> instead of by the fan 20. A damper 19 in the chimney flue 10 controls the flow of the waste gases, and the exhauster 16 and air supply fan 20 are driven by the same motor 21. Figs. 5 and 6 show the reversing mechanism, the valves 7, 7'; 9, 9<1>; 12, 12<1> being connected by cables 44, 45, 46 to the end of a crank 51 fixed to a shaft 53 rotated by a motor 56. A crank 59 adapted to be clutched to the shaft 53 by a clutch 60 is connected by cables 62, 62<1> to the valves 25, 25<1>. When the preheater 13 is not used the crank 59 is disconnected from the shaft 53 so that the valves 25 are not reversed, and the mushroom valves 26, 26<1> are operated by screw members 68 adapted to raise or lower pulleys 69, 69<1>. In a modification the waste gases are delivered to a waste heat boiler before passing to the stack. The air inlet valves 26, 26<1> may be replaced by a single valve admitting air into the flues 24, 24<1> whence it passes to either regenerator according to the position of the valves 25, 25', which in the modification are operated by the reversing mechanism at all times. The exhauster 16 may discharge the gases direct to the atmosphere. Cold air may be admitted to mix with the preheated air entering the regenerators.
