Winding-machines.-Paper or like cones or tubes are secured upon the spindles of yarn winding machines by means of flexible metal plates a, Figs. 1 and 3, formed with teeth a<2> and adapted to be extended or contracted diametrically to hold or to release the cone or tube. The plate a, Fig. 1, is normally dished and is pressed between members n, j, Fig. 9, to extend teeth a<2> in securing the cone c. The plate a, Fig. 3, is normally flat, is formed with unequal teeth a<3>, a<4>, and is placed between members g, b<1>, Fig. 7. When removing the cone c the spindle d is turned about the pivot e out of the winding position shown in Fig. 7, and the sleeve g is pressed by the cam-member f<1> along the collar b<3> thereby contracting the teeth a<3>, a' and permitting removal of the cone c. In a modification for cylindrical tubes, Fig. 11, two plates a of the form shown in Fig. 3 are secured between members u, v; u', y respectively, the spindle d being formed with lubricating grooves r, s, t. In a further modification, two plates a, Fig. 13, of the form shown in Fig. 1, are secured by nuts 4 against collars 2. An alternative form of plate a is formed with arms a<2> Fig. 6, having unequal projections a<3>, a'. Any desired number of arms may be provided while the arms may be of equal or unequal lengths and may diverge by the same or different amounts from the surface of reference.
