Yarns, gassing and singeing.-In singeing textile goods such as yarns, bands and fabrics, the singeing flame is formed by electric sparks or arcs, the goods being passed through or adjacent to the spark gaps. The apparatus for producing the sparks may comprise a 12 volt accumulator 11, a circuit breaker 10 which may be speeded up to produce 50-100 sparks per second, a transformer 8 of ratio about 1 to 1000, and a rheostat 12 variable from 0-12 ohms, the latter being adjusted to give a current consumption of 1.5 to 2 amperes with a gap of about 5 millimetres. Potentials of about 20000 volts for the secondary circuit are thus developed and sparks or arcs pass between points 4-4x of plates 3 and plates 2 which are in the secondary circuit and are also earthed. The plates 2 may be hollow and perforated at 2c and compressed air may be blown through these perforations. The fabric 1 passes between the points 4-4x and the plate 2 and are singed by the arcs produced. The plate 2 may be replaced by a roller of non-conducting material such as ceramic ware running in water or other liquid in a container which is earthed. Two plates such as 3 may be connected to one secondary terminal of the transformer the fabric passing between them so that both sides of the fabric may be singed at the same time. In this case the fabric is made conducting by treatment with water or other liquid in a container which is connected to the other secondary terminal and also earthed. The upper and lower plates 3, 3a may be spaced apart as in Fig. 5. Yarns 1, Fig. 7, may be treated by passing vertically between electrodes 2, 3 having their points radiating as shown. The electrodes may be arranged so that the sparks run in a parallel plane adjacent to the goods to be treated, the penetrative effect of the sparks being thus avoided.
