Dynamometers.-In a crushing or refining machine comprising a fixed casing 11 against which the material is pressed by rollers 38 mounted on levers 27 pivoted to a rotary wheel 23, the pressure between the rollers 38 and the casing is indicated by a dynamometer pointer 67, Fig. 5. The wheel 23, Figs. 1, 2 is mounted on a shaft 21 driven by a gear wheel 44 and the levers 27 are engaged by a disc 30 mounted on a shaft 22 passing through a central bore in the shaft 21. Relative movement between the shafts 21, 22 applies pressure to the grinding rollers 38. Spiral gear wheels 62, 63, of opposite inclination, are mounted on the shafts 22, 21 respectively and are engaged by one or more pairs of similar wheels 64, 65 fixed to a sleeve 66. Each sleeve 66 is mounted on a rod 55 passing through discs 53, 54 rotatably mounted on the shafts 22, 21 respectively. A casing 52 separates the two discs, and the casing and discs may be moved longitudinally of the shafts by a handwheel 56, which is non- rotatable expect by hand, to provide relative movement between the two shafts. Rotary movement of the driving wheel 44 is transmitted to gear wheels 62, 63 and cause the planet wheels 64, 65 to revolve and rotate the casing 52 and end discs 53, 54. As the end disc 53 is secured by a spring 68, the pointer 67 will move to indicate the pressure on a scale 69.
