308,441. Ryder & Sons, Ltd., T., and Ryder, F. E. Feb. 29, 1928. Lathes.-In a vertical automatic turning-lathe of the type having an indexable work-carrier provided with a number of rotary work-spindles while the tools are mounted in a vertical central slide band upon radially disposed horizontal slides (not shown, further supplementary tool holders are provided to perform additional operations on the work-piece. The slide b carries a plate a carrying a slide d on which is mounted an angularly - adjustable slide e fitted with a tool-slide j. A rack h secured to the plate a engages a pinion f mounted in the slide d and integral with a pinion g engaging a. rack i on the tool slide. A bar k secured to the slide d carries adjustable stop-nuts m and during the downward feed of the slide these nuts engage the fixed head n and arrest the slide d whereupon further movement of the slide b and plate a rotates the double pinion f, g to feed the tool slide. When the main slide is returned a pawl o on the slide d engages a bar q secured to the fixed head, thus arresting the slide d and causing the return of the tool slide. When the original position of this slide is reached, a stop u disengages the pawl from its bar and the slide d thereafter rises with the main slide. This device enables bevel-turning, undercutting &c. to be performed. Specifications 230,569 and 245.617 are referred to.
