Caoutchouc synthetic; butadiene. - In the process of obtaining polymerized products of butadiene and wherein the butadiene is obtained from acetylene by converting acetylene into acetatdehyde, the latter into aldol, reducing the aldol to 1-3 butyleneglycol and splitting off water from this by treatment with phosphorus pentoxide or catalysts to form butadiene, the acetylene, or gases containing it, are produced from methane or gases containing methane so as to obtain the acetylene free from substances deleterious to the subsequent reaction e.g. A gaseous mixture containing methane is passed through a flaming arc, and the resulting acetylene is converted by treatment with a aulphuric acid solution of a mercury salt into acetaldehyde which is stirred with dilute alkali to effect the condensation to aldol. The aldol is treated with hydrogen under a pressure of about 100 atmospheres and at about 100‹ C. in the presence of finelydivided nickel and the resulting 1 3-butyleneglycol is passed at an elevated temperature over diatomite which has been treated with phosphorus pentoxide. The butadiene obtained is liquefied by compression and treated with 1 per cent of metallic sodium to effect the polymerization. Specifica.- tion 17193/13 is referred to.
