Abstract

Locking nuts. - For locking nuts and bolts grooves or recesses are provided in the nut and the bolt and the locking member is shaped so that when inserted it cannot move laterally and upon a change of shape is prevented from being withdrawn longitudinally. The nut b, Fig. 1, is cut away so as to have an internal conical surface g and the bolt a is cut across to provide a shoulder f. The locking member is formed of soft material which after being inserted is deformed so that it is unable to move in either direction. In the modification the nut has open sided slots and the free ends of the inserted member h, Fig. 3, are bent back to engage a groove formed in the outer face of the nut. According to a further modification the end of the bolt has a hole i, Fig. 4, and the locking member h extends radially on either side thereof. In other modifications the bolt has cross slots and the nut in addition to slots has an enlarged space i, Fig. 5. In this case the locking member h is in two strips and is similarly bent over at the ends. When the locking member is in two parts these may be arranged in slots at right angles and have central interlocking slots to prevent lateral displacement.
