Combined turning and boring or drilling machines.-A universal machine for operating a number of machine-tool units such as a band saw 36, circular saw 14, lathe 23, and other wood and metal working tools and applicable also to the driving of household tools and implements, and jewellers tools including lathes, buffers, drills, &c. comprises a driving unit which is adjustable on a support so that it may engage directly with and drive any of the driven units. In Fig. 1, the table 5 mounted on legs 8 has radial slots 12 to which the units, with radially arranged driving shafts, are secured by bolts 13. The circular saw co-operates with a slotted work table 17 and its spindle is geared to a shaft 21 carrying a cone clutch member 22. The lathe 23 comprises a head stock 25 whose spindle 26 also carries a clutch member 28. The lathe bed 30 is secured to the headstock by bolts 29, 34 and by removing the bolt 34 the bed may be swung downwardly when not required. The band saw is driven by a friction pulley 37 on a shaft 38 carrying a clutch member 39, the friction pulley engaging the wheel 42 over which the saw passes. The power unit comprises an electric motor 45 bolted to a plate 47 carried on a turntable 49. A stirrrup 51 mounted in the turntable, engages notches in the plate 47 to impart axial movement to the motor which carries a clutch element 53 adapted to engage any of the tool unit clutch elements. A latch 55 is provided to lock the motor in its driving position. The turntable carries a depending tubular member 50 accommodating the supply cable, 56<1> and carrying a motor 62 operating a suction fan 61 to remove dust, chips, &c. from the tools. The fan is located in a conduit 63 Extending from an annular chamber 61<1> which communicates with a receptacle 57 and fits in a screened cover 67. The suction device rotates with the driving motor so that the conduit 63 communicates with the appropriate one of a series of conduits 64 arranged adjacent the tools. In a modification the driving motor may be stationary and the tools supported on a rotary table.
