Abstract

304,429. Mayer., F., and Bristol Aeroplane Co., Ltd. Dec. 5, 1927. Wind-vanes.-In a wind indicator of the kind comprising a vane in the form of a tubular member mounted to be rotatable about a horizontal axis on a support which can turn about a vertical axis, the vane is made as a rigid structure. In the form shown the vane comprises rods &c. 10 - - 13 arranged in two planes at right angles to each other and constituting the edges of a rectangular pyramid. The rods are joined together at their outer end 14 and at their inner end are. connected by rods 15 forming the base of the pyramid. Extending from the same base is a short pyramid comprising arms 17 - - 20 connected together at 21. The framework is covered by fabric which may envelop the framework to .form a bag-like structure or as shown it may extend in the planes 22, 23 between the rods 10, 12 and 11, 13 respectively. The horizontal axis of rotation 24 of the vane is carried by frames 25, 27 and 26, 28 attached to sleeves 30, 31 which are rotatably mounted on the mast 29. The sensitiveness of the vane may be controlled by an adjustable balance weight 32. In order that the inclination of the vane may be proportional to the wind speed there is provided on the framework a suitably-shaped cam 34 over which and a pulley 36 passes a cable 35 to which a weight is attached. The cable may be connected to an indicator &c., so that the wind speed can be read at the ground level. A lamp 33 may be provided on the vane. The movements of the vane may be damped by providing frictional restraint about the axis 24 or by providing a dash-pot &c. in connection with the cable 35. The bearings 30, 31 are lubricated from a reservoir 38 from which wicks &c. extend. The mast 29 is supported on a wall &c. in brackets having clamping coverplates which can be released to enable the mast to be adjusted vertically.
