Abstract

304,368. Adams, J. S., and Pratt, A. W. Oct. 20, 1927. Operating and controlling doors by springs; checks.-In a check device of the piston and sleeve type for use with door springs the arrangement provides that there is no reduction of volume of space on the piston rod side of the piston in the cylinder when the resistance fluid is being transferred to the other side of the piston. As shown, the check device comprises cylindrical sleeves b, g oil which the outer sleeve b is closed at one end by a cap c and has packing f at the other end, and the inner sleeve g, sliding within the sleeve b, is closed at one end by a cap h and is open at its other end g'. The caps h, c are attached respectively to fixed and movable parts of the door spring mechanism. A piston e, sliding inside the sleeve g, is secured to the cap c by a rod d. When the door is opened the sleeves are extended, oil passing through the passages i to the space j, which increases as the door is being opened. On the return of the door to the closed position, the passages i are closed by valves k and the oil that is compressed in the space j returns to the other side of the piston through the passage l. This passage is restricted by a valve n and a spring-pressed rod o in the piston-rod d, the spring r being adjustable by means of a screw p. A relief valve is provided for excessive pressures, and a filling hole s is also provided.
