Emulsions, making.-Aqueous emulsions or colloidal suspensions of liquids, for example oils, or solid substances, for example, sulphur, waxes, resins, dissolved in solvents, are prepared by intimately mixing the liquids or solutions with colloidal precipitated inorganic powdery substances such as dried precipitated silicic acid, alumina or ferric oxide, and stirring the mixture into water. Preferably the liquid is sprayed into the, solid ingredient and the mixture subsequently made uniform by grinding or the like. The quantity of liquid used should not be greater than 50 per cent of the solid and is preferably 15-25 per cent thereof. On mixing with water most of the solid matter is precipitated and the remainder may be removed, for example by a centrifuge. The final products are stable, clear or milky liquids which may be concentrated by evaporation or centrifugal force to 40 or 50 per cent or even to 90 per cent of suspendied matter, the concentrated products being of buttery character but being still miscible with water. Small quantities of protective colloids or stabilizers, for example, soap may be added to the concentrated products. Examples of the process are as follow : (1) 1 kilogram pure dried colloidal precipitated silicic acid is mixed intimately with 200 gms. earth-nut oil. (2) 500 gms. of silicic acid as above are mixed with 10 gms. sulphur dissolved in 30 gms carbon disulphide. These mixtures are subsequently stirred into water to form clear emulsions or suspensions.
