Fluid-actuated valves. - A non- return valve is biassed to the closed position by an unbalanced load which increases as the valve opens and is actuated by a pressure differential resulting from the formation of the water passage acting through means which set up a dashpot action as the valve closes. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the casing is constricted at 2 to cause a reduction in pressure above the valve member and the valve member 3 is arranged to slide over a fixed inner member 9 to form a chamber 4. The chamber 4 communicates with the inlet 1 through a valve controlled passage 10 and a passage 5 adapted to be closed as the valve approaches its seat. The valve member is partly counterbalanced by a weighted lever 6 bent so that the load bending to close the valve increases as the valve moves to its open position. When the device is arranged horizontally the lever is arranged so that the effect of the weight 6 is a maximum in the open position of the valve. In the form shown in Fig. 3 an eccentrically mounted butterfly valve is mounted in a contracted part 16 of the casing 15 on a shaft 12 provided with a pair of vanes 14 working in arcuate chambers 21, 22 formed by partitions 23, 24 in a casing 13. The chambers on one side of each vane are connected by pipes 19, 20 controlled by a cock 28 to the contracted part of the conduit and those on the other side by pipes 17, 18, 18<1> controlled by a cock 27 to a full bore section. The pipe 18<1> is provided with a non- return valve 29 and a bye-pass 26 having a throttling screw 25 whereby the rate of closing may be regulated. In a modification the valve is actuated by a piston connected by a link to the valve member which is arranged in an expanded part of the conduit. In a further modification the valve is in the form of a flap pivoted to one side of a square conduit and is actuated by a hinged member working in a segmental chamber.
