Abstract
300,230. Withers, J. S., (Smith, J. W.). Aug. 9, 1927. Rolling wheels.-A drop-forged wheel-blank H, Fig. 7 is rolled to a tapering curved section by rolls 2 mounted on swinging axes and co-operating with a driven platen 1 having a curved working surface 3. The invention may be applied to the manufacture of articles other than wheels requiring such a curved section. or it may be used for smoothing, shaping or finishing a wheel otherwise fully formed. The work may be completed in one or more passes of the rolls. As applied to the manufacture of a wheel in two passes of the rolls, the machine comprises a platen 1, Fig. 2, supported by a head 21 in a vertically adjustable member 10 which is mounted on standards 11, the platen being driven by a motor 30 through driving-jaws 32 and having thrust-bearings 24 for taking the working pressure. Lubricant is supplied through a pipe 38 to the bearing 22 of the head 21 and through ports to the thrust-bearings, the head 21 being surrounded by a casing from which lubricant may overflow to the chamber 45 and thence to the drain pipe 46. The lubricant serves also to .cool the platen-mounting. The rolls 2 are mounted on spindles or are integral therewith, the spindles being mounted in roller bearings in housings 51 and being adjustable axially thereof by liners of varying thickness which may be inserted under the rear bearings 77. The rollhousings have trunnions 53, Fig. 6, adjust ably secured by liners 91 and screws 92 within a ring 54 which is itself capable of slight adjustment within a bearing 55 by means of an inter- - posed ring 93 of radially varying thickness provided with a lug 95, Fig. 2 whereby it may be secured in the required angular position by a pin 96 and one of a series of holes 97. The trunnion bearings for the roll-housings are carried by a vertically guided carriage 56 actuated through toggles 58, Fig. 5 by a cam lever 66 and cam 68, the latter being provided with two active faces 70, 71 corresponding to the elevations of the carriage 56 necessary to effect the required passes. An auxiliary cam 72 with two projections 73, 74 " breaks " the toggles to allow the carriage 56 to descend between the successive passes. The roll-housings are oscillated about their trunnions by links 112 universally connected at 114 to levers 110, Fig. 4 which are positively actuated in one direction by cams 101, 102 and positively returned by cams 116, 117 acting through levers 118 and links 108. 109. The blanks are placed by hand on centres 4 rotatably mounted in a two-part ring 127, Fig. 3 mounted - on a circular saddle 120 having a sleeve 121 guided in the roll carriage 56 and urged upwardly relatively thereto by a spring 126. The work-ring 127 is rotated step-by-step about the saddle 120 by ratchet mechanism 130, 129 actuated by a cam-driven rock shaft 104 and adjustably connected links 131, 132. The work is centred on a spring-pressed pin 5 mounted in the platen-carrier and on being lowered after completion and rotated to bring a new blank into position, is stripped from the centre 4 and discharged, by a chute 134. Arrangements are provided for supplying lubricant to the roll-spindle bearings through the trunnions, the lubricant circulating through the roll spindles and being delivered from the roll housings through flexibly connected pipes 89. The, motions for the cam shafts may be obtained by a motor and wormgearing.
