Latex, treating.-A reversible uncoagulated gel is formed by adding to latex a small quantity of a hydrosol of silicic acid and allowing the mixture to stand. Either an acid or an alkaline hydrosol, but preferably the latter, may be used. The hydrosol may be pre-formed or may be formed in the latex. In one example, 5 ccs. of a. solution. of sodium silicate, sp. gr, 1.2, is added to 100 ccs, of 36 per cent ammonia-preserved latex, and to the mixture 10 ccs. of 6 per cent boric acid is rapidly stirred in. A gel which may be used for spreading, coating &c., forms in a few minutes. In another example, an alkaline hydrosol is first made by adding 25 ccs. of 7 per cent acetic acid to 60 ccs. of sodium silicate, sp. gr. 1.2, and 130 ccs. of latex is then stirred in. In forming the hydrosol any acid, e.g. citric, benzoic, hydrochloric, sulphuric, having a pH value between 4 and 6 may be used. The invention may be applied to natural, artificial, vulcanized, creamed, or partially-coagulate latices, with or without compounding or vulcanizing ingredients. Gels formed in accordance with the invention are stated to have the property of depositing their rubber rapidly upon a filtering-body or matrix, with or without the aid of an electric current.
