Producers. - To enable poorer gases, such as coke or blast-furnace gases, lignite distillation gases or waste-reducing gases from the process, to be used as reducing ga&es in the process of the parent Specification, the gases are passed through a layer of glowing carbonaceous material such as coke so that the ratio CO2 : CO in the treated gases is at most 0.45, and the ratio CO : CH4 is at least 1.5. In a modification, a portion of the gas is treated at a high temperature and then mixed with the untreated portion to give the required composition. The heat of the coke may be maintained by using an electric furnace or an externally-heated retort, or by adding air or waste oxygen to the gases. In working in a closed circuit and adding air, part of the gas is withdrawn from time to time to reduce the nitrogen content.
