Abstract
297,925. White, A. E., (Gough Stemming Machine Corporation). Aug. 9, 1927. Tobacco. - Stripping is effected by a pair of belts 50, 51 running transversely to the direction in which the leaves are fed through the machine. An inclined guide plate 77 assures the proper alignment with regard to the butting mechanism which consists of a brush 30 having a bevelled leading end 31. It rotates above a stationary surface 36, which may be part of the table top 1, and is at the same level as the surface of the card-clothed belt 9. A plate 38, Fig. 3, causes the leaves to enter the card-clothing. Its forward end is upturned, and as a whole it is downwardly inclined towards its spring-pressed exit end. Adjacent to the edge of the surface 36 are guide wires 46 extending thence across the stripping mechanism, anl running between the parallel rows of the teeth of the card-clothing 10. The stripping belts 50, 51 are of elastic material such as rubber covered canvas and the pulleys 52, 53 may be similarly covered while the shaft 57 of the upper rear pulley is mounted in adjustable brackets. To aid in retaining the blade of the leaf a guide 45, similar to the guide 38, and a brush 70 are mounted above the card-clothing 10. After stemming, the blades pass beneath the belt 20 which, in conjunction with the wires 46 release them from the clothing 10. In a modification, Fig. 6, the stationary guide 77 is replaced by a belt 86 the surface of which moves at the same rate as the feeding belt 82. The butting mechanism 30 is omitted, and the stripping belts 97 are forwardly inclined to the conveyer belts instead of being at right angles as in the first construction. The guide plate 45 is also replaced by a belt 107 of card-clothing driven either by one of the pulleys about which it passes or by the engagement of its surface with that of the clothing beneath it. Both upper and lower cloLhings are cleaned at the exit end of the machine by wire drums 112.
