Abstract

297,120. Barber, H. G., and Wettenhall, A. L. Sept. 16, 1927, [Convention date]. Operating gates by weights; gate hodders. - A tubular frame gate which is hinged at its lower edges and supported in an upright position by cables attached to gate-closing weights is provided with plates adapted to be engaged by the approaching vehicle which presses down the gate into a flat position, the gate being held in this position by a catch until the rear wheels' of the vehicle have passed over the gate. Fig. 1 shows one half of the gate, the holding-down catches 36 being shown in Figs. 5 and 6. The lower bar 2 of the gate is mounted in sockets 9 of the side supports 12, the gates being held normally in an upright position by weights 32 attached by cables 24 to the upper bar of the gate. An approaching vehicle engages the plates 6 on the gate and moves it downwardly about its side pivots until the side studs 47 enter channels 46 and rest in recesses 51 of the catch plates 36. During the movement each plate 36 is moved downwardly against the action of a spring 39, Fig. 7, a boss 48 of the plate engaging a bolt 40, which is slidable in a slot 41 of the post 35. When the front wheels of the car are clear of the gate the studs 47 move upwardly to the position 54, Fig. 6. The studs move into the position 53 when the rear wheels are on the plates 6 of the gate, and when the gate is free the studs rise through the exit channels and the gate is then closed by the counterweights. By freeing one side of the gate it may be swung about the vertical pivots 14, Fig. 1.
