Abstract

297,010. British United Shoe Machinery Co., Ltd., (United Shoe MachinÚry Corporation). June 11, 1927. Stiffeners, machines for.-Relates to apparatus for conditioning box or other shoe stiffener blanks, and consists in means for delivering conditioned blanks automatically in succession, the means contacting only with one face of the blank. Preferably the apparatus is combined with the machine using the blank, and the automatic delivery of a conditioned blank is in timed relation to the machine's cycle. For a stiffener such as described in Specification 210,168, [Class 17 (ii), Boots and shoes, Construction of], a tank 6 is provided into which the sfiffener is dipped. The tank is substantially enclosed in a chamber 5 so that inflammable vapours do not escape. The liquid in the tank is kept at the desired level by flow from a reservoir 31 with an air-tight filler cap and a depending feed pipe 32 terminating at the proper level. Stiffener blanks from a magazine 16 are fed by a reciprocating blade surmounted by a bevelled separator blade to a conveyer belt 7 provided with a multiplicity of upstanding wires. The belt is driven by a shaft 15, also carrying a crank linked to the feed slide. Springs 29 depress the belt and stiffener thereon into the liquid. The tank is so positioned that the stiffener is passed through it during one, rotation of the driving pulley 9, there being no halt while the blank is in the liquid. The dimensions of the apparatus shown are such that the blank is fed through the apparatus in four rotations of the pulley 9, the blank at the delivery end passing under a hinged flap 37 on to a table 36. A spring finger 38 tends to lift the advancing edge of the blank by pressure on its rear edge, and a comb 39 enters between the wires of the conveyer to separate a blank which may adhere thereto. The apparatus may be combined with a pulling-over machine of the kind described in Specification 7005/00, the usual vertical clutchoperating rod carrying a bar clamped to a rod 72, Fig. 6, mounted for vertical movement. A. notch 87 in the rod engages a spring pressed stop 77 in a member slidable on the rod, and is adapted to engage stops 69, 70 on a clutch of the ball or roller type interposed between a constantly driven pulley and a shaft 58. This shaft carries. a bevel wheel with half its teeth cut away, cooperating with a bevel wheel of half its size fixed to the shaft 15. In operation, the machine's. cycle is completed with two depressions of the clutch treadle. The first depression lifts the stop 77 freeing one projection 69, and causing the shaft 58 to rotate The stop 77, being free, is spring-pressed away from the rod 72 and falls to stop the shaft 58 a.t half a rotation. This half rotation does not drive the shaft 15, but brings the teeth on the mutilated bevel wheel into position to drive the shaft 15 on the second depression of the clutch treadle. A conditioned stiffener blank is thus delivered to the table 36 just before it is required by the operator to insert in a fresh work-piece.
