Abstract

296,656. Baumann, K., and Metropolitan-Vickers Electrical Co., Ltd. Nov. 7, 1927. Divided on 305,285. Stuffing-boxes, substitutes for. - Labyrinth packing in which expansion of a strip due to rubbing contact tends to increase the clearance, comprises expansible conical strips 4, Fig. 2, on one member forming radial clearances with non-conical strips 5 on the other member. The conical strips may coact with the adjacent surfaces of the strips 5, or with the remote surfaces, as shown. A conical strip 6, Fig. 3, may extend outwards from the inner edge of a root portion 7. The root portion 7, Fig. 5, may carry a number of conical strips 12 coacting with plain or stepped surfaces on strips 8. Alternatively the strips 12 may coact with the ends of cylindrical flanges on the strips 8. Specification 225,936 is referred to.
